About Walter Chandoha

WALTER CHANDOHA has been a professional freelance photographer/writer for over forty years specializing in flora and fauna of the world. His photographs have appeared on over 300 magazine covers and in thousands of advertisements for a wide range of companies - some small and many in the Fortune 500 category. They have even appeared on the giant 18x60 foot Kodak Colorama in Grand Central Station in New York City.

Chandoha has over 200,000 stock images of animals and gardens in both color and in retro black and white. The horticultural file contains plants that grow in gardens: flowers, vegetables and herbs; trees, shrubs and vines; lawns and ornamental grasses. And there are landscaped grounds and casual gardens; container and window box gardens , house plants and wild plants and lots of other stuff. And there are pix of people doing their thing in gardens - and the many objects that beautify gardens: walks, patios, fences, gates, arbors. And even pictures of tips, tricks and time-savers that help gardeners to help their gardens grow.

The animal file has a sprinkling of the East African safari animals. a good variety of domestic farm animals, some great black and whites of the monkey family ranging from tiny spider monkeys to the huge gorillas, some studio made others done in zoos. By far the strongest segment of the animal file is the cat and dog collection Appealing, expressive images, clean colorful studio backgrounds make Chandoha's cat and dog photographs ideal candidates for digital manipulation for ads, magazine covers, packaging, calendars, posters and greeting cards.

His photographs and illustrated articles on animals and gardens have appeared in TIME/LIFE BOOKS, ORTHO BOOKS, NATIONAL HOME GARDENING CLUB BOOKS, MEREDITH BOOKS, FAMILY CIRCLE, LADIES HOME JOURNAL, WOMAN'S DAY, GOOD HOUSEKEEPING, NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC, COUNTRY LIVING, HOUSE BEAUTIFUL, ARCHITECTURAL DIGEST, GARDENING HOW-TO, ORGANIC GARDENING, GARDEN DESIGN, BETTER HOMES AND GARDENS AND THE NEW YORK TIMES.

He and his family live on a 46 acre farm in northwest New Jersey in still rural Hunterdon County. On the property, Walter has many experimental gardens where he grows flowers, vegetables, fruits, herbs and ornamental grasses. An ongoing project is making photographs of these gardens in the four seasons of the year - each from the same vantage point in spring, summer, fall and winter.

A marketing graduate of New York University's Stern School of Business, he is a member of ASMP/NJ, American Society of Media Photographers and GWA,. Garden Writers Association and a former director in both organizations. In 1997 he was made a Fellow of the GWA. For ten years he was an official photographer of the Philadelphia Flower Show. He has written and/or illustrated 26 books, mostly of cats and dogs. His book HOW TO SHOOT AND SELL ANIMAL PHOTOS is considered a career blueprint for photographers aspiring to follow in Walter Chandoha's footsteps. His pictures have also appeared on posters, bill boards, calendars, greeting cards, jig-saw puzzles, coffee mugs and even credit cards.
